Allocating Reliability and Maintainability Downward

Systems have top-level requirements for reliability, availability and maintainability. The reliability engineer, working with the systems engineer, must, in turn, allocate requirements to the sub-systems and components that comprise the system. Multiple possible allocations usually exist. Cost minimization or other objectives are used to select among alternative allocations. This tutorial frames the problem, presents simple but useful rule-of-thumb cost models and demonstrates how to solve simple examples using the BlockSim software and a spreadsheet.

Key Words: Systems Engineering, RAM Requirements Management, RAM Requirements Allocation
